Distilling

Distilling is an industry that attracts passionate people and we are certainly passionate about it. Within the business we have significant experience of small craft distillation and malt whisky distilleries all the way through to large scale column distillation and vatting / bottling plants.

Craft Distilling

We see great potential in the craft distillation in Australia. We have met a lot of amazing people and feel this is just the start of the journey. Whether it be gin, vodka, rum or whisky we provide an expert service that ensures the successful operation of a compliant plant. We can deliver any distilled spirit project from grain intake through to new make spirit for filling into tankers or casks. If you already have your distillery we are happy to offer advice for optimising operation, improving cooling and heating setup and guiding you through compliance with AS1940, Hazard Area Classification and the associated Electrical Equipment (EEHA).

We have experience in cask handling projects from filling through to disgorging and are familiar with palletised systems and traditional on the bulge filling. We also have significant experience in vat room work and the associated bottling halls including spirit filtration, chill filtration, blending and marrying. We have worked on numerous addition projects and specialise in hygienic CIP Systems to facilitate the production of different products in the same plant with full batch integrity.

Compliance

The handling and storage of flammable liquids is an inherent part of the distillation process. However, the storage and handling of flammable liquids is a hazard to workers and also potentially to the general public, where the visitor experience is such a big part of the industry. It is therefore important to understand and effectively manage this risk. Some key points to consider:

  • Risk Assessment – The risk has to be As Low As Reasonable Practicable (ALARP).

  • AS1940 - With respect to flammables we look to AS1940 ‘The storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids’ as the standard that is most relevant for Distilleries.

  • HAC / EEHA - Hazardous Area Classification (HAC) and Electrical Equipment in Hazardous Areas (EEHA) are required for areas where flammable liquids and vapours are present.
